According to ScienceDaily, a new cause for infertility amongst couples has been discovered. Approximately one third of couples diagnosed with infertility fall into a category called "unexplained infertility" in which the doctors do not know why the couple is not able to conceive, because everything seems to be ok. A recent study performed at the school for Biomedical Sciences in Queen's University Belfast identified that 80% of their study couples with unexplained infertility experienced damaged sperm DNA. While a small amount of damaged DNA is normal, these couples all showed signs of high sperm DNA damage. These findings could help eliminate a large portion of the "unexplained infertility" couples. Additionally, it allows specialists to begin designing treatments for this problem. Hopefully, this will allow a lot more couples to conceive, that previously could not.
I found this article interesting because we have been discussing reproduction in class. Infertility was an issue that I did not previously know a lot about, or know many causes for. Additionally, a lot of infertility issues stem from problems within the female partner. This was intriguing because it identified a problem within the male reproductive system.
