Nanoparticles In Cancer Therapy

The link for the article:http://www.springerlink.com.lib-ezproxy.tamu.edu:2048/content/v1152020215823lj/fulltext.html

This article talks about how Nanoparticles can be used in the detection and treatment of cancer. The current therapies used in cancer have an effect on  the cancer cells, but at the same time they also affect other healthy cells in an adverse way. Similarly It is easier to treat cancer in the early stages, but  It can be difficult to detect cancer cells  at the initial stage. ancer cells leave biomarkers and Nanoparticles can be used in the detection of these biomarkers/cells. Nanoparticles can be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer(through effective drug delivery mechanism). The three main Nanoparticles that found interesting in this article are Gold and  Silver Nanoparticles and Quantum Dots. While detecting cancer Optical Microscopy can be used to see silver and gold because they are bright enough and they do not photo decompose. Quantum Dots are made up of few hundred to a few thousand molecules, they are crystalline and when illuminated by a laser they emit different colors of light. They also stay in the cytoplasm for a long time.

Some of the Nanoparticles that  exist are anticancer agents themselves. The most important aspect in the destruction of cancer cells is to destroy the cancer cells while spare the normal cells. The Way this works is the particle recognizes the cancer cells, sticks on to it, moves into the cell and destroys the cell.  Scientist have developed “dendronized polymer” in which the drug can be attached to the dendrite of the polymer.Antibodies can also be loaded with drugs, but they form covalent bond and affect the working of the antibody, but in this article they combined cancer fighting antibodies with  Fullerenes (C60).  Fullerenes (C60) is made up of carbon and is spherical, so a lot of cancer fighting drug can be stored inside it. Similarly gold Nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes can also be used in  drug delivery mechanism.  Nanoparticles have a good use on photodynamic therapy of cancer. In Photodynamic therapy drugs are activated by light once they reach their destination. In PDT  the molecules are incorporated with organically modified silica Nanoparticles. The advantage of this process is that the drugs are  not leaked during circulation and it is absorbed by the tumor once it reaches the destination. Nanobombs  are also an interesting topic in the article. They are minimally invasive and start exploding in a series and explode due to the effect of  of heat and light. They can be made to explode once they reach the vicinity of the cancer cells. In this way they can kill the cancer cells and the pathways that help nourish the cancer cells.Hence i see a huge role of Nanoparticles in the future of medicine. This article talks about a lot of other Nanoparticles than I discussed.
