In Vivo Maturation of Functional Renal Organoids Formed from Embryonic Cell Suspensions
This article talks about research conducted to re-grow kidneys inside the patient using fetal kidney tissue.
When the cultured fetal kidney is implanted it will undergo maturation including vascularization when coated with the vascular endothelial growth factor. Once this process was complete the researchers then injected the test animals with albumin proteins capable of emitting. These proteins were filtered out by the new kidney proving that it could function at least crudely as an normal kidney.
This is fascinating because it shows we are getting closer to being able to make functional organs from their stem cell counterparts.
