Foods for Preventing Cancer

Cancer is a recurring and enigmatic subject of interest in the medical world. Research has shown that almost all human beings, if they live to their seventies, will form some sort of microscopic cancer in their bodies, if not worse. Cancer is not only a hot topic because of its profound presence in the everyday lives of many Americans, but also because of its elusive nature. Cancer can affect virtually any part of the body, giving it potential to be incredibly difficult to treat or cure. For this reason, researchers and doctors are looking into preventative methods for battling cancer.
Dr. William W. Li, President of the Angiogenesis Foundation, speaks of new research regarding cancer prevention and anti-angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the process through which the body creates new blood vessels. Li describes cancer cells as parasites that “highjack” these newly formed blood vessels as a means of obtaining a permanent oxygen supply. The constant blood flow to the cancer cells then stimulates them, allowing growth and multiplication. Li believes the key to cancer prevention is by avoiding angiogenesis and “starving” the cancer cells by cutting off their blood supply. Li argues that eating the right foods, prepared in a certain way, in the correct proportions, can have a substantial impact on limiting angiogenesis in the body. This is due to bioactive compounds found in the foods and how they can be enhanced by the way you prepare the food. He also mentions that some varieties of foods prevent angiogenesis better than others. This makes me wonder if genetically altered foods have had a major effect on our health. This article was of particular interest to me because of its alternative approach to treatment and divergence from traditional medicine. I am a big believer in a healthy lifestyle being the best defense against any sort of illness. For this reason, preventative medicine really appeals to me. Some people view this “new age” outlook as foolish, but I think that making simple dietary changes seems to be the least I can do in an effort to prevent a disease as serious as cancer. Also, I believe that this sort of cancer prevention has the potential to be beneficial on an international level. Healthy foods are accessible and affordable for most of the general public. When it comes down to paying either grocery bills or medical bills, I think I could splurge on a few extra tomatoes.
