New Development in Protecting Women

I found an article about the development of an HIV-blocking gel for women. I selected this article because its focus is on the protection of women, which naturally I find very important being a female myself. The article reports that scientists at the University of Utah have created a 'molecular condom'. It is in the form of a gel which changes to a semisolid when pH rises due to the presence of semen. Women are infected by HIV when the virus diffuses from semen to the vaginal tissue. This new development traps AIDS virus particles which stops them from infecting vaginal cells. This new development traps AIDS virus particles which stops them from infecting vaginal cells. This could also be used for other purposes. This could be used as another form of contraception. It could also be used to prevent infection by other viruses such as the human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, which is a major cause of cervical cancer. I find it very interesting how there are so many applications for this type of development and I think this is a great start to more forms of preventative medicine.
