A window into your brain
Researchers at UC Riverside have developed a transparent skull implant that can create a "window into your brain. The implant is made of yttria-stablised zirconia (YSZ) a ceramic used in many other biomedical applications. However, it is processed in a unique way that makes it transparent.
So, why is this important? Currently laser techniques cannot be used on the brain without performing a craniectomy, the removal of a portion of the skull, due to the dense structure of the bone. However, laser light can pass through the implant meaning it can visualise tissue and ablate anything needing removal. Although a craniectomy is required to insert the YSZ implant the process need not be repeated for further treatment. Thus, reducing the risk factor of the patient as repeated surgery would not be required.
