Carbon Monoxide Protects Lung Cells Against Oxygen-Induced Damage

I thought this article was very interesting because it discusses ARDS, which we talked about for our last SNBAL. As Dr. Wasser told us, ARDS can be contracted after a trauma. It is treated by ventilating the patient with 95% pure oxygen. However, too much exposure to pure oxygen can also cause lung damage. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh believe that treating patients with small doses of carbon monoxide will stop the destruction of lung cells and help prevent cell apoptosis.
