 A unique form of neurosurgery, the Gamma Knife procedure, is especially designed to focus on a specific problem area in the brain and use Gamma rays (radiation) to fix the site. This procedure is non-invasive, allowing no cutting of the skin or skull and, best of all, no anesthesia is needed. Despite concentrating high doses of radiation to a spot in the brain, their is no damage to the surrounding areas and is considered an outpatient procedure. The treatment is effective for situations such as tumors and meningiomas. I chose the article because my grandfather has neurological issues due to many side-effects of medications and a natural deterioration caused by his many illnesses. Recently, he has been in and out of the hospital because of frequent strokes. Because of the ever-reoccuring topic, brains were on my mind and further exploration lead to an interesting Gamma Knife procedure.
