Alcohol and Your Heart: Friend or Foe?

Overall, the idea of alcoholic intake protecting the heart from ischemia varies depending on the consumer characteristics and simple variation. Gender, drinking patterns, familial predisposition, and other health factors affect the cardio-protective nature ofalcohol. Once again, the answer is not black and white.

For women the risk of ischemia related death is higher than for men based on differential risk curves. Yet, each individual has different effects on cardiovascular system from alcohol. The effects of alcohol on other diseases must also be considered. Even though one alcoholic drink a day could decrease the negative effects of ischemia, cancer risk increases.  However, according to Dr. Rehm, the net effect is beneficial. With each increasing drink the risk for disease increases; consequently, binge drinking especially has negative consequences that should be carefully considered.

Knowing the importance of an all-things-considered judgment helps me in making all choices in life including health choices such as having an alcoholic beverage or more. No matter what the doctors say is correct, there is always a chance of a new discovery completely disproving said fact, thus leaving the door of uncertainty always open.
