New Approach to IVF Treatments

Throughout the course of history, women have struggled with fertility. In recent years treatments have been developed to combat fertility issues. A common form of fertility treatment today is In Vitro Fertilization, but IVF has its limitations. The success rates for IVF vary from 1 in 3 cycles to 1 in 4 cycles. Because of these low success rates, doctors often exceed the recommended number of embryos to be implanted in one cycle. This causes a high occurence rate of multiple pregnancies in patients undergoing IVF. Multiple pregnancies are associated with many pregnancy complications and should be avoided if possible (especially pregnancies of two or more). Fertility doctors today are on the verge of a breakthough that could dramatically increase the success rate of IVF and eliminate the multiple pregnancies associated with it. Dr. Geoffrey Sher, one of the doctors who developed this new technique said, "This very exciting breakthrough could more than double IVF pregnancy success rates while reducing the risk of multiple births. We are now much closer to the goal of one IVF attempt, one egg, and one embryo, yielding one healthy baby." Scientists hope to accomplish this by determining which egg have a full "complement" of chromosomes. This chromosome analysis can rule out eggs that are not viable. Studies have shown that this new technique increases IVF birth rates by 100%. This is exciting new research in the field of fertility.
