clinical proteomics of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a very complex disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is very difficult to diagnose because it's symptoms are fleeting and also resemble dementia. The brains of AD patients are characterized by the presence of extracellular deposits of amyloid-beta (Aβ) containing plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of paired helical filaments of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Symptoms of Alzheimer's patients have also been found in unimpaired elderly individuals.
