Drug-Carrying Micro Robots... in your eye!
Picture courtesy of Cracked.com and NewScientist.
This tiny robot allows for targeted drug release in the eye, as opposed to injections, which can diffuse and be less effective. Currently, they are being used to treat macular degeneration. Tests are being conducted in pig cadaver eyeballs as of this past March (2011), and human trials are to soon begin.
Also of interest is how they guide it into the eye after they inject it in with a needle. It is guided by an EM navigation system. There are links to the paper in the article.
