Polyphasic Sleep-The Uberman Schedule
I have always been interested in altering my sleeping pattern in such a way to gain a maximum amount of hours through my college years for studying purposes. Polyphasic sleep can help-it is a type of schedule that allows you to sleep at multiple times during the day, instead of just once or twice that day (which is what we are used to, monophasic or biphasic sleep). Some say this is dangerous, while others wouldn't change it back. This article explains the background of the Uberman schedule, a plan made to help increase your conscious hours by sleeping at 30 minute intervals 6 times throughout the day, fairly evenly spaced. After a week of attempting this, any normal human would be exhausted from the lack of sleep, but would gain 3 extra hours a day (if that person normally slept 9 hours/night). It works by maximizing your REM sleep while lowering the 4 other sleep phases. The rest of the article goes more in depth and also explains how to help cope with the schedule.
